Herb of the day
Dandelion
Taraxacum officinale
Root day: by tradition the part of the plant to gather today
The familiar yellow spring flower; both its root and its leaves are used.
Description
A perennial of the daisy family with milky sap. The root is dug up in spring before flowering or in autumn. It contains bitter substances, inulin and minerals.
Traditional use
Traditionally used as a bitter tea to support digestion and the flow of bile, and as a mild diuretic; its young leaves make a salad.
Preparation
Decoction: bring a teaspoon (about 3–4 g) of chopped root to the boil in 200 ml of cold water, simmer for 2–3 minutes, leave for 10 minutes and strain.
Caution
Not to be used with gallstones, blocked bile ducts, or stomach or duodenal ulcers. May cause allergy in people sensitive to the daisy family. If you take diuretics, ask your doctor first.
