Recommendations for the day

Garden

Waning moon: by tradition it favours sowing and planting root vegetables, pruning, weeding, working the soil and manuring. Produce harvested now is said to keep better.

Leaf day: the day for lettuce, spinach, cabbage and leafy herbs. By tradition the best day for watering and mowing the lawn; produce meant for storage is better not picked today.

Lifestyle

Waning moon: by tradition a time of letting go, cleansing and tidying up. It favours decluttering, lighter meals and finishing tasks.

Water day: a day of feelings and renewal. Mind that you drink enough; a warm bath, quiet and restful sleep are especially welcome.

Household

By tradition a water day is for watering houseplants and wet cleaning; laundry is better done on another day.

Nutrition

Carbohydrate day: in the traditional moon calendar the quality of carbohydrates comes to the fore. Whole grains and vegetables are a better choice today than sugar and white flour.

Gratitude

In the evening, write down three things you are grateful for today. Small things count too.

Herb of the day

Sage

Salvia officinalis

Leaf day: by tradition the part of the plant to gather today

A silvery-leaved, aromatic Mediterranean shrublet, a time-honoured herb for the throat.

Description

A perennial shrublet, 30–70 cm tall, with wrinkled grey-green leaves. The leaves are gathered before flowering. It contains an essential oil (thujone, cineole, camphor), tannins and rosmarinic acid.

Traditional use

Traditionally used as a gargle for inflamed throat and mouth, and internally as a tea for digestive complaints and excessive sweating.

Preparation

Gargle: pour 200 ml of hot water on a tablespoon of leaves, steep for 10 minutes and use lukewarm several times a day. For a tea, use less: a teaspoon.

Caution

Because of its thujone, take it internally only briefly and in moderation. Avoid internal use during pregnancy and breastfeeding (it may reduce milk supply) and with epilepsy.

The qualities of the days and the recommendations come from tradition and folk observation and are not scientifically proven.
