Fruit day: by tradition the part of the plant to gather today
A thorny shrub with tart orange berries, growing on sunny, sandy ground.
Description
A shrub 1–4 m tall with narrow silvery leaves, with separate male and female plants. The berries of the female plants, ripening in autumn, are gathered. They are rich in vitamin C, carotenoids, vitamin E and valuable fatty acids.
Traditional use
Traditionally enjoyed as a source of vitamins in juice, syrup and jam, especially in autumn and winter; its oil is used externally in skin care.
Preparation
Drink the juice diluted with water, tea or yoghurt, with honey to taste. One or two teaspoons of fresh berries a day are enough.
Caution
Large amounts may upset the digestion. If you take anticoagulants, ask your doctor first.
