Recommendations for the day

Garden

Waning moon: by tradition it favours sowing and planting root vegetables, pruning, weeding, working the soil and manuring. Produce harvested now is said to keep better.

Root day: the day for sowing, planting and lifting carrots, radishes, beetroot, potatoes and onions. Tradition also recommends it for harvesting root vegetables meant for storage.

Lifestyle

Waning moon: by tradition a time of letting go, cleansing and tidying up. It favours decluttering, lighter meals and finishing tasks.

Cold day: a day of stability and being grounded. It favours planning, sorting out finances and tasks, and a calm hour in the garden.

Household

By tradition a cold day suits sorting the pantry, the cellar and storage, and checking winter stores.

Nutrition

Salt day: in the traditional moon calendar the quality of minerals and salts comes to the fore. Today it is worth cooking with less salt and choosing root vegetables and seeds.

Barefoot

If the weather allows, walk barefoot on grass or sand for a few minutes and pay attention to what your soles feel.

Herb of the day

Marshmallow root

Althaea officinalis

Root day: by tradition the part of the plant to gather today

A velvety-leaved member of the mallow family whose root is rich in mucilage.

Description

A perennial, 1–1.5 m tall, liking damp places, with pale pink flowers. The root is dug up in autumn, peeled and dried. Its main constituent is mucilage, which forms a protective film on mucous membranes.

Traditional use

Traditionally used for a dry, tickly cough, a scratchy throat and to protect the lining of the stomach.

Preparation

Cold infusion: soak a teaspoon of chopped root in 200 ml of cold water for 1–2 hours, stirring now and then, strain and drink warmed to lukewarm. Boiling water reduces the mucilage.

Caution

May slow the absorption of other medicines: take them at least an hour before or after. With diabetes, keep an eye on your blood sugar. See a doctor for a lingering cough.
