Recommendations for the day

Garden

Waning moon: by tradition it favours sowing and planting root vegetables, pruning, weeding, working the soil and manuring. Produce harvested now is said to keep better.

Flower day: the day for sowing, planting and tending flowers. By tradition cut flowers last longer today, and herbs gathered for their flowers are best picked now.

Lifestyle

Waning moon: by tradition a time of letting go, cleansing and tidying up. It favours decluttering, lighter meals and finishing tasks.

Light day: a day of lightness and connection. A good day for conversations, learning, fresh air and a little music.

Household

Air the rooms well on a light day; by tradition it is a good day for cleaning windows and airing bedding.

Nutrition

Fat day: in the traditional moon calendar the quality of fats comes to the fore. Light, good-quality oils such as olive oil, and nuts, are a good choice today.

Herb of the day

Pot marigold (calendula)

Calendula officinalis

Flower day: by tradition the part of the plant to gather today

A garden plant with bright orange flowers, a favourite of traditional skin care.

Description

An annual ornamental and medicinal plant of the daisy family, 30–50 cm tall. The fully open flower heads or the petals are gathered. It contains carotenoids, flavonoids and triterpenes.

Traditional use

Traditionally used externally as an ointment, infused oil or compress to care for minor skin injuries and sore or dry skin, and as a mouth rinse.

Preparation

Compress or rinse: pour 200 ml of hot water on 1–2 teaspoons of flowers, steep for 10 minutes, strain and let it cool.

Caution

May cause allergy in people sensitive to the daisy family. Not recommended internally during pregnancy. Do not use on deep or infected wounds: see a doctor.
