Herb of the day
Rosehip
Rosa canina
Fruit day: by tradition the part of the plant to gather today
The red hip of the dog rose, the vitamin C-rich basis of winter teas and rosehip jam.
Description
The red hips of the dog rose ripen in autumn and, by tradition, are picked after the first frost. Inside are small hairy seeds. They contain vitamin C, carotenoids, pectin and organic acids.
Traditional use
Traditionally enjoyed as a source of vitamin C in tea, jam and syrup, especially in the cold season.
Preparation
Tea: soak 2 teaspoons (about 2–5 g) of crushed hips in 200 ml of cold water for a few hours, bring slowly to the boil and strain through a fine sieve.
Caution
The hairs inside the hips irritate mucous membranes, so always strain the tea carefully. Generally well tolerated.
