Recommendations for the day

Garden

New moon: by tradition a day of rest in the garden. Instead of sowing and planting, it is a good time for weeding, removing diseased branches and planning the weeks ahead.

Leaf day: the day for lettuce, spinach, cabbage and leafy herbs. By tradition the best day for watering and mowing the lawn; produce meant for storage is better not picked today.

Lifestyle

New moon: a time for quiet and fresh starts. A good occasion for a lighter, simpler day and for putting into words what you would like to begin in the coming weeks.

Water day: a day of feelings and renewal. Mind that you drink enough; a warm bath, quiet and restful sleep are especially welcome.

Household

By tradition a water day is for watering houseplants and wet cleaning; laundry is better done on another day.

Nutrition

Carbohydrate day: in the traditional moon calendar the quality of carbohydrates comes to the fore. Whole grains and vegetables are a better choice today than sugar and white flour.

Herb of the day

Stinging nettle

Urtica dioica

Leaf day: by tradition the part of the plant to gather today

A common plant with stinging hairs; its young spring leaves make both a vegetable dish and a tea.

Description

A perennial, 50–150 cm tall, with male and female plants; its leaves and stems are covered in stinging hairs. The leaves are gathered before flowering, wearing gloves. It is rich in minerals (potassium, calcium, iron), flavonoids and organic acids.

Traditional use

Traditionally used as a diuretic tea, as part of spring "cleansing" routines, and eaten as a vegetable, like spinach.

Preparation

Tea: pour 200 ml of hot water on 1–2 teaspoons (about 2–4 g) of dried leaves and steep for 10 minutes. Drink plenty of fluids with it.

Caution

Not to be used for fluid retention (oedema) caused by heart or kidney disease. If you take anticoagulants, diuretics or blood-pressure medication, ask your doctor first.
