Recommendations for the day

Garden

Waning moon: by tradition it favours sowing and planting root vegetables, pruning, weeding, working the soil and manuring. Produce harvested now is said to keep better.

Root day: the day for sowing, planting and lifting carrots, radishes, beetroot, potatoes and onions. Tradition also recommends it for harvesting root vegetables meant for storage.

Lifestyle

Waning moon: by tradition a time of letting go, cleansing and tidying up. It favours decluttering, lighter meals and finishing tasks.

Cold day: a day of stability and being grounded. It favours planning, sorting out finances and tasks, and a calm hour in the garden.

Household

By tradition a cold day suits sorting the pantry, the cellar and storage, and checking winter stores.

Nutrition

Salt day: in the traditional moon calendar the quality of minerals and salts comes to the fore. Today it is worth cooking with less salt and choosing root vegetables and seeds.

Herb of the day

Ginger

Zingiber officinale

Root day: by tradition the part of the plant to gather today

A tropical plant with a hot, aromatic rhizome, one of the best-loved spices in the kitchen.

A tropical herbaceous perennial whose rhizome is used fresh or dried. Its heat comes from gingerols and shogaols; it also contains an essential oil.

Traditional use

Traditionally taken to ease nausea, travel sickness and digestive complaints, and as a warming drink in cold weather.

Preparation

Tea: pour 200 ml of hot water on 2–3 thin slices of fresh ginger and steep for 5–10 minutes. Add lemon and honey to taste.

Caution

If you take anticoagulants or have gallstones, ask your doctor first. During pregnancy only in small amounts and after checking with your doctor. May irritate a sensitive stomach.
